Seriously interesting musings on all things brunch & beyond.
Seriously interesting musings on all things brunch & beyond.

We've got some limited time offers at Tried & True from tomorrow in celebration of St Patrick's Day (see the bottom of this email) and of course we'll be enjoying toasting the day with a Guinness or two. But what makes St Paddy's so eagerly celebrated around the world? I mean... I definitely see the attraction of a street party fueled by stout and a cracking U2 cover band but this year I've decided to dig deeper, look under the hood, to be sure to be sure.

Celebrating the Magic of Saint Patrick's Day

Saint Patrick's Day holds a special place in the hearts of millions worldwide, transcending its Irish origins to become a global celebration of culture, heritage, and community. As March 17th approaches, the world prepares to don green attire, join parades, and raise a glass to honor Ireland's patron saint and the rich cultural traditions he represents.

The Beloved Saint Behind the Celebration

Saint Patrick, born in the late 4th century, wasn't actually Irish by birth but is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. His legendary banishing of snakes and use of the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity have become iconic elements of Irish folklore. The date of his death, March 17th, evolved from a religious observance into the vibrant celebration we know today.

The Global Irish Connection

What explains the widespread popularity of Irish culture and its people? The Irish diaspora – estimated at over 70 million people worldwide who claim Irish ancestry – has played a crucial role in spreading their cultural traditions. This diaspora resulted largely from the Great Famine of the 1840s and subsequent waves of emigration.

The Irish have won hearts across the globe with their rich storytelling traditions and literary contributions, warm hospitality and community-centered values, resilient spirit in the face of historical hardships, distinctive music, dance, and cultural expressions, and commitment to celebration and finding joy despite challenges.

Saint Patrick's Day Around the World

The celebration of Saint Patrick's Day has evolved uniquely across different countries. The United States is home to some of the largest celebrations, including Chicago's famous river dyeing and New York City's massive parade. Canada's cities like Toronto and Montreal host significant parades, while Australia, Argentina, and even Japan celebrate with festivals honoring Irish culture through music, dance, and food.

Traditional Irish Culinary Delights

No Saint Patrick's Day celebration is complete without traditional Irish fare. Corned beef and cabbage, though more Irish-American than traditional Irish, has become synonymous with the holiday feasts. Irish soda bread features a cross cut into the top, traditionally to ward off evil spirits. Hearty dishes like colcannon (mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage), Irish stew, and boxty (potato pancakes) represent the comfort and simplicity of Irish cooking.

Toasting to Tradition: Beverages and Celebration

Beverages play a central role in celebrations with Guinness consumption soaring worldwide on March 17th – an estimated 13 million pints served globally. Irish whiskey brands like Jameson and Bushmills feature prominently in celebrations, while green beer, though not authentically Irish, has become a festive hallmark in many countries.

The Spirit of Connection

What makes Saint Patrick's Day truly magical is its ability to create connection. For one day, everyone can be "Irish by association," celebrating shared humanity through music, food, drink, and tradition. Whether you're attending a parade, preparing traditional recipes, or simply wearing green, the day offers a moment to celebrate resilience, community, and the enduring appeal of Irish culture worldwide.

Come down and celebrate with us at Tried & True with our exclusive St Patricks Specials for a limited time. You can even have a Guinness with breakfast. Why not?

We look forward to seeing you soon!
